On November 6th, Healthy LifeStars will host events across the nation to bring awareness, education and networking opportunities to prevent childhood obesity by bringing together like-minded people to learn and network. The event will also feature Iowa’s first annual Step – Up – For – Kids Celebration event to benefit Iowa’s Healthy LifeStars, a childhood obesity prevention program.
This event will include an all-day conference, featuring experts across the state presenting their cutting edge research in childhood nutrition, physical activity, and prevention of long term adverse health effects caused by obesity. The conference will be followed by a networking social hour focused on Healthy LifeStars. The networking social hour will include brief remarks highlighting the program, announcing the coach of the year, and emphasizing the work of the students and coaches from around the state in the last year. All funds from the conference registration and social networking hour will go towards the support and delivery of the Healthy LifeStars program across the state of Iowa.
The Iowa Institute of Public Health Research and Policy values the ability to provide continuing education credit and 6.0 credits will be offered to physicians, nurses, health educators, public health professionals, dietitians, and social workers for attending this conference.

Keynote Address
The conference keynote address will be given by Dr. Jennifer Groos.
Dr. Groos earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency at University of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital in Madison, WI. She returned to Iowa in 2004 and joined Blank Children’s Hospital General Pediatric Department. She is a board-certified pediatrician and an adjunct faculty member with the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa. She is active in community and legislative advocacy and health eating and active living promotion with many partners within the state. Dr. Groos served as the lead physician for her clinic for the American Academy of Pediatrics Institute on Healthy Childhood Weight (IHCW) Childhood Obesity in Primary Care (COPC) Quality Improvement project in 2016 and as IHCW ancillary faculty for the COPC 3.0 project. She currently serves as Lead Faculty for the ongoing COPC projects. Dr. Groos leads the 5-2-1-0 Health Care Program in Iowa. She serves as a childhood obesity advisor (COACH network member) for the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Obesity. She is the director of the Healthy Kids Center at Blank Children’s Hospital. She is a past-president of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, chair of the chapter committee on legislation, and founder and chair of the chapter committee on obesity. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Iowa Medical Society, Polk County Medical Society, John Stoddard Cancer Center, and The Youth Tribe. She received the 2018 Iowa Medical Society Physician Community Service Award for her statewide childhood obesity work.
