“The Potential for Geologic Carbon Sequestration in Iowa”

Iowa leads the nation in biofuels production, an industry at the center of carbon sequestration (aka carbon capture and storage or CCS) research in the U.S. Ethanol production emits nearly pure carbon dioxide (CO₂) that can be captured and sequestered with little or no refinement needed. Thus far, the only option for dealing with CO₂ captured from Iowa facilities seems to be lengthy pipelines that would transport and sequester CO₂ into deep rock formations in Illinois and North Dakota. However, the Iowa Geological Survey is investigating the possibility to sequester CO₂ in rock formations in Iowa.

This presentation aims to clarify the process of geologic carbon sequestration, inform the audience about the deep geologic formations in Iowa that have the potential to store CO₂, and describe how geologists approach characterizing suitable storage sites.
