New student organization ‘Peace by Peace’ invites members

Published on January 19, 2021

Peace by Peace, a new UI student organization, is a coalition of students who are dedicated to promoting awareness, advocacy, and action on matters of state violence throughout the world. Students of all disciplines are invited to join in pursuing these objectives:

  • to empower students to engage in discussion about humanitarian activism;
  • to research and learn about timely wars and egregious crimes of the state through multiple lenses including but not limited to law, public/global health, economics, philosophy, and politics; and
  • to advocate and lobby for peace-building policies both domestically and abroad from all levels of government (including but not limited to municipal, state, federal, and international governmental organization policies).

The group currently meets on a bi-weekly basis on Wednesdays at 6PM through Zoom. At past meetings, members and curious students discussed a weekly topic such as electoral violence and the #EndSars campaign. Additionally, the group hopes to network with peace/human rights groups, and facilitate discussions and speaker presentations about these topics.

The group also runs a multidisciplinary undergraduate journal that publishes undergraduate student writings on timely peace, conflict, and transnational issues. Journal submissions can include *but are not limited to* independent research, academic course papers, interviews, study abroad reflections, commentary on  social justice and service-oriented experiences, op-eds, art, drama, photography, and journalistic pieces. The extended deadline for students to submit their writing is Feb. 1, 2021.

Students and faculty can also follow on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @uipeacebypeace!
