Operational Procedures for Podium Classrooms

With the introduction of new health and safety guidelines set forth by the University of Iowa, the College of Public Health has also introduced new efforts instructors should take before and after classes to ensure a clean learning space for all.

Please remember to wipe down commonly used surfaces and items, such as:

A/V, clicker, remote
Clickers, Remotes and A/V
Phone
Phone handset and dial if used.
Document Camera
Camera controls and work surface.
Keyboards and Mice

Getting Started with University Classroom Technology

Using the A/V Control Panel

Crestron
Extron
  1. Start the A/V system by pressing the on button or touch control panel screen
  2. Select the source desired. (By default the A/V system will use the room PC
  3. Remember to press the OFF when finished

If you encounter an unresponsive control panel, check control panel is not muted, or report to ITS HelpDesk if A/V system remains unresponsive

Using the Computer

  1. Press the Space Bar on computer keyboard to wake the main display.
  2. Log on with your HawkID & password. Please remember to log off when finished

If you cannot access the computer’s login menu, restart the computer; or contact ITS HelpDesk.

Using Computer/Web-conferencing USB Microphones

A/V
  • Computer/Web-conferencing USB microphones are mounted on lecterns and connected to the computer monitor USB hubs.
  • Microphones may be moved within the available length of the USB cable.

If you encounter a non-working computer/web-conferencing USB microphones:

  • select the Microphone (USB audio CODEC) as the audio input device in Zoom, Panopto, or Skype
  • if Microphone (USB audio CODEC) is unavailable as audio input, unplug/re-plug USB cable on back of MXL microphone, then re-select as the audio input in Zoom, Panopto, or Skype

Using Computer/Web-conferencing USB Camera

Web Camera
  • Computer/Web-conferencing USB Cameras are mounted on lecterns and connected to the computer monitor with USB Hubs
  • Cameras may be re-positioned as needed

If you encounter a non-working computer/Web-conferencing USB microphone:

  • select Microphone (USB audio CODEC) as the input device in Zoom, Panopto, or Skype
  • if Microphone (USB audio CODEC) is unavailable as an audio input, unplug/re-plug USB cable on the back of the MXL microphone, then re-select the microphone as the audio input in Zoom, Panopto, or Skype

Using Computer/Room Audio

  • A/V control panels contain a volume knob, or touchscreen volume buttons. Turn the knob to the right [press the volume up arrow] to increase volume, turn the knob to the left [press the down arrow] to decrease volume
  • Press the mute [PIC MUTE] button on the A/V control panel to control audio and screen muting.

If you cannot produce in-room audio with the A/V system on and unmuted:

  • ensure the computer, device, app, or website audio is not muted.
  • increase the computer/device audio level, or increase the A/V control panel audio level.
  • select ExtronScallerD (Intel(R) Display Audio) as the speaker or audio playback source in Zoom, Panopto, or Skype.
  • check the computer/device audio settings: select ExtronScalerD (Intel(R) Display Audio) as the audio output device or playback source.

Connecting a Laptop/Tablet via HDMI

  1. Connect the provided HDMI video cable on lectern to the laptop/tablet HDMI port [laptops/tablets or HDMI adapters are not typically provided]
  2. Select HDMI as the source on the A/V control panel.

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio through HDMI with the A/V system on and unmuted with HDMI selected:

  • Increase A/V control panel audio
  • Toggle the MUTE button on A/V control panel
  • Please note that not all HDMI adapters well with every device and the Extron A/V system. Testing your HDMI connection ahead of time is recommended.
  • Restart the A/V system by pressing the control panel OFF button, wait a few minutes, then press ON again, or report the issue to ITS HelpDesk.

Using Blu-Ray Player

  1. Select Blu-Ray as the source on the A/V control panel
  2. Press Eject on the Blu-Ray player disk tray [typically in the A/V rack] to load BD or DVD
  3. The Blu-Ray player may be controlled with the Extron control panel or by a remote, both are typically available near the Blu-Ray player on in the A/V rack.

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio from the Blu-Ray player with the A/V system on and unmuted, and Blu-Ray is selected:

  • Increase A/V control panel audio
  • Toggle the MUTE button on A/V control panel
  • Restart the A/V system by pressing the control panel OFF button, wait a few minutes, then press ON again, or report the issue to ITS HelpDesk.

Using Document Camera

Document Camera
  1. Select DOC CAM as the source on the A/V control panel. The document camera should auto power on.

If you cannot produce in-room video and/or audio from the Blu-Ray player with the A/V system on and unmuted, and DOC CAM is selected:

  • Toggle the MUTE button on A/V control panel
  • Press the power button on the document camera [red LED light should turn green on the document camera]. If unresponsive, check the document camera has the power cable connected.
  • Restart the A/V system by pressing the control panel OFF button, wait a few minutes, then press ON again, or report the issue to ITS HelpDesk.

Using Solstice

Emergency After Hours Support

On-call, after hours emergency support is available outside normal ITS HelpDesk hours. On-call service is available for wide-scale outages and university-critical business. To receive emergency support, call 319-384-4357 (319-384-HELP), and follow directions to leave a message. The ITS HelpDesk on-call agent should quickly return your call.
